Indian Rheumatology association

Associate Editor's Message

Dear Readers,

This issue has a strong and very timely theme because infection prevention and recognition are increasingly integral to rheumatology practice, particularly as immunomodulatory therapies become more intensive and diverse. Current rheumatology guidance emphasizes systematic screening for opportunistic infections and individualized vaccination strategies in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

In this issue, we take a practical journey “Beyond Autoimmunity”—from infections that mimic autoimmune disease to difficult-to-treat fungal infections, mycobacteria, PCP, herpes zoster, CMV, parasitic infections and melioidosis among others. We also explore pattern-based recognition of inborn errors of immunity and the evolving role of vaccination and prevention. Our aim is to provide clinicians with practical insights that can help recognize infections early, distinguish mimics from autoimmune disease, and make safer decisions when prescribing immunosuppression.

Beyond the clinical articles, we bring you the resident desk, exploring how laboratory exposure shapes rheumatology training, along with Rheuma Roots from NIMS, the State Chapter Chronicles: Karnataka, and an interesting Case. We hope this issue encourages us to look beyond the obvious autoimmune diagnosis, maintain a high index of suspicion for infection, and make infection prevention an integral part of everyday rheumatology practice.

Happy reading!
