Dear Colleagues,
It gives me great pleasure to present the June edition of the Indian Rheumatology Association Newsletter. This issue explores a topic that has captured the attention of rheumatologists worldwide—the complex interplay between obesity, metabolism, inflammation, and musculoskeletal health.
The editorial team has brought special focus to “Obesity and Rheumatic Disease Dynamics”, helping us better understand how excess adiposity influences disease susceptibility, activity, treatment response, and long-term outcomes across a spectrum of rheumatic and immune-mediated inflammatory disorders. From the impact of obesity on rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, to the metabolic dimensions of osteoarthritis, the burden of obesity in fibromyalgia, and the role of diet in controlling inflammation, our contributors provide valuable clinical insights relevant to everyday practice. We also explore the emerging role of GLP-1 receptor agonists and their potential implications beyond weight reduction, opening new avenues of discussion within rheumatology.
This edition continues to celebrate the diversity of our specialty. Through the Lens showcases striking visual learning opportunities, while Brain Bites challenges readers with a rheumatology crossword designed to stimulate curiosity and reinforce knowledge. We are delighted to highlight the contributions of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences- Kochi, in advancing rheumatology care and education, and to feature the Delhi Rheumatology Association in our State Chapter Spotlight. We are also honored to include insights from Prof. Rohini Handa, whose contributions continue to inspire generations of rheumatologists.
As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms medicine, our AI Corner explores the growing interface between technology and clinical practice, including the art and science of effective communication with AI tools. The voices of our residents, the future leaders of our specialty, find expression in a dedicated section that reflects their learning journeys, aspirations, and innovations. We also examine how social media can be harnessed responsibly to enhance patient education and public awareness.
The strength of the IRA lies in the collective wisdom, enthusiasm, and commitment of its members. I extend my sincere gratitude to all authors, contributors, reviewers, and the editorial team under the leadership of Dr. R. Subramanian for their efforts in bringing this issue to fruition. I hope this newsletter informs, inspires, and stimulates meaningful discussion among our readers.
Wishing you an engaging and enriching reading experience.
With warm regards,
Dr. Rajkiran Dudam
